How to Start a Podcast
More than a third of the U.S. population regularly consumed podcasts in 2022. Should you/your organization start a podcast? Find out why Stanford Surgery decided a podcast made sense — and learn how to start your own.

When I decided to start a podcast in 2022, I was looking for new ways to promote our physicians’ research. I also knew from a recent pulse survey that my target audience felt overwhelmed by their email inbox and spent a lot of time commuting. Creating a podcast was a great solution.
Starting a podcast requires a lot of time and a fair amount of budget. So before you jump in, STOP! Think about your goal(s) and determine if a podcast will help you meet them.
If you decide that a podcast is right for your organization, here’s an eight-step recipe for getting started:
- Choose a Topic
- Define Your Formula
- Set Up Your Space
- Invite and Prepare Your Guest
- Record
- Edit
- Publish
- Promote
