UCI Health: New Hospitals, New Patients, New Website

How one of California’s largest health systems transformed its website after historic expansion.

Green-Amanda-WriterIt takes hard work to make something look easy.

UCI Health, the clinical enterprise of the University of California, Irvine, was overdue for a website update. The last major overhaul of its technology platform and content had occurred a decade ago, with minimal, reactive changes over the years. Now, UCI Health had the opportunity — and responsibility — to proactively rethink the consumer experience on ucihealth.org.

Then the big project got bigger. UCI Health acquired four hospitals and 15 associated outpatient locations in 2024, becoming one of the largest health systems in California. The new UCI Health website would need to consolidate information from several medical facilities for a region of nearly 4 million people on a single site.

The goals, in six simple words: Build trust and make it easy.

“A website redesign can be defined in many ways, but we thought about it as a global strategic and technological overhaul,” says Tara Nooteboom, director of consumer digital strategy at UCI Health. “Not only do we need to meet the contemporary expectations of consumers and ensure content accurately reflects services. We want to put UCI Health in a position for long-term success, with the flexibility to evolve in the future.”

Read on to learn how UCI Health refreshed its website to improve searchability, integrate clinical trials, and optimize content, and set the foundation for future enhancements.
