Marshfield Clinic Spins Off Information Services Group
by Jane Weber Brubaker
The key challenges facing healthcare systems today revolve around the quality and efficiency of care delivery. How can technology optimize the time and talents of the care team in a rapidly evolving environment that focuses on care coordination? Will fee-for-service be replaced by value-based models? When? How can providers qualify for Meaningful Use incentives?
Encouraged by its breakthroughs and innovations in these areas, Marshfield Clinic launched a new healthcare technology company, Marshfield Clinic Information Services (MCIS). The expertise that Marshfield Clinic has acquired as a result of its own successful accelerated learning curve will now be available to MCIS customers.
Marshfield Clinic is a nonprofit physician-run multispecialty practice with more than 50 locations in northern, central, and western Wisconsin. Founded in 1916 by six physicians as a group practice, the clinic is home to 7,000 employees, including 700 physicians representing 80 specialties and subspecialties. The clinic has a long history of health information technology innovation, beginning 50 years ago with telemedicine.
