Sheryl JacksonWe asked Chris Boyer, 2018 Healthcare Internet Hall of Fame inductee, director of digital and analytics at University of Minnesota Health and Fairview Health, and host of the touch point podcast to weigh in on digital trends that will affect hospitals and health systems in 2019.

Digital transformation is critical for all members of the healthcare industry to survive the growing demand to drive costs from the healthcare system while still providing optimum patient care.

In a 2017 study conducted by SAP Center for Business Insight in collaboration with Oxford Economics, 400 global C-suite healthcare executives agreed that digital transformation will bring about the positive changes demanded of healthcare providers, but almost half of health leaders cited lack of mature technology as the greatest obstacle to digital transformation.

Survey results indicate that healthcare is at the beginning of the transformation.

  • Only 2 percent of survey respondents reported digital maturity in all areas.
  • 32 percent indicated maturity in some areas.
  • 54 percent were piloting digital technologies.

All foresee a broad adoption of big data and analytics, cloud computing, Internet of Things, and artificial technology in the next two years.

Reflecting on these changes, Boyer says, “Since we will now have new technologies at our disposal, our roles as digital marketers will evolve to something different.” Here’s how he sees things unfolding in 2019 and beyond.
