As if there weren’t enough pressures on providers and health systems, now they have to worry about competition from retail health clinics. Attention-grabbing headlines like this one from Forbes makes you wonder where all this is leading: “Healthcare for $4: Are You Ready For Wal-Mart To Be Your Doctor?”
Health clinics operated by drugstore chains like CVS and Walgreens and big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target are growing at a fast pace, offering convenient, low cost care. The problem is they may not be fully integrated with the local health network. Care coordination is the Holy Grail in the current environment, and lack of connection between community health systems and these walk-in clinics is the weak link. One retail model, FastCare, has a different approach.
