Memorial Hermann’s ‘Moments’ campaign highlights the human side of healthcare.

Melissa SherKel stands on a sunlit tennis court at the beginning of his video. His voiceover, raw and unflinching, begins: “They told me words I’ll never forget. ‘You know you’re going to die tonight, right?’”

Over the next six minutes, Kel tells his story: A brutal attack in Nigeria, where he is left for dead. Six days in a coma. A flight back to Houston, followed by years of therapy and surgeries at TIRR Memorial Hermann to reclaim his speech and mobility. And the nonprofit he founded, later, to support individuals impacted by traumatic brain injuries.

His account is a powerful chronicle of survival and strength, and the video follows him long after his time in the hospital. His story ends with a message to his attackers. “You didn’t break me,” says Kel. “Thank you for making me stronger.”

Kel’s deeply personal story is told entirely in the first person. So is Sarah’s story, chronicling her risky surgery to remove a mass of abnormal blood vessels in her brain. And Lauren’s story, following her complicated pregnancy and early delivery.

Their stories are featured in Memorial Hermann’s campaign, “Moments: Stories That Shape Us.” Each is told from one perspective only, that of the person who lived it.

Read on to explore how the “Moments” campaign offers an intimate look at the transformative experiences that take place at Memorial Hermann through in-depth, first-person storytelling.
